The calm `Poniente` wind means no competition in the race areas this morning

ISAF World Sailing Championships - The calm `Poniente` wind means no competition in the race areas this morning
ROTA, BAY OF CADIZ, SPAIN-(21-9-2003) Sunday morning there was scarcely any wind, the calm of the Poniente obliged the Race Committee to postpone the fleets of the Mistral M & W, Finn, Star, 470 M & W and the Tornado until 11:30, while the rest of the Classes have a rest or reserve day.

An hour later the Delta flag was raised for the 470 Class in Rota and in Puerto Sherry of the others. The poniente slowly began to come up and in a short time the races were able to go ahead on this 11th day of the competition.

The Tornado & 470 M have decided to sail today, although they have a reserve day, so they can recuperate the races they missed yesterday due to the wind. They will then have finished their qualification days and start on their finals tomorrow.

The Mistral class have their last day today in the World Championships, as do the Star. The three finalists will receive their Medals tonight at 20:00 at the pool-side terrace of the Hotel Yacht Club.

The Pole Przemek Miarczynski leads the classsifications for the Mistral Men. His excellent performance during the competition has guaranteed him the gold. He is also an assured candidate for the Olympics in Athens.

Israel could gain two medals in this Championships with Lee Korsitz in the Mistral W and Gal Fridman in the Men’s. Korsitz only has to come in the top six today to gain a gold medal, and for Fridman it may be the silver or the bronze. It will be a double triumph for for the Israeli’s as no-one has been able to gain these titles before now.

Xavier Rohart & Pascal Rambeau (FRA) in the Star Class are also on the point of becoming World Champions followed by the Swedes and the British (if the round today does not change the results).

Lastly, announcing that at 14:37 they have given the go ahead for the Star & 470 M, with the wind at 6 knots; without incidents.
